New Delhi: A BJP MLA, who was a part of the State government panel that recommended remission to all the 11 men found guilty, today said that some of the convicts in the Bilkis Bano case of the 2002 Gujarat riots are “Brahmins” with good ‘sanskaar’ or values.

He said that it is possible they might have been fixed due to their past family activities, while justifying their release amid uproar in the country over the incident.

Following facing backlash over the statement, the MLA tweeted today and clarified, ‘My statement has been misrepresented. The accused of rape do not belong to any caste. If someone has committed a crime, he must be punished. We should respect the court’s decision. The MLA, in his statement yesterday, had also said that he was not aware that the accused who were released from jail after 15 years were involved in the crime.
