Jamshedpur: Prohibitory orders were imposed in Jamshedpur’s Shastri Nagar area on Sunday evening after two groups clashed with stones and set fire to a mob following alleged desecration of a religious flag, police said. Two shops and an auto-rickshaw were set on fire by a violent mob, officials said.

Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd, officials said. Adequate police force has been deployed in Shastri Nagar under Kadma police station area to maintain law and order, the officials said.

“Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure have been imposed,” Sub-Divisional Officer (Dhalbhum) Piyush Sinha said.

East Singhbhum District Deputy Commissioner Vijaya Jadhav said some anti-social elements were trying to disturb peace and sought cooperation from common citizens to foil their conspiracy.

Tension prevailed in the area on Saturday night after members of a local outfit found a piece of meat pasted on the Ram Navami flag, police said.

Earlier, stone-pelting took place after a clash between two groups during a Ram Navami procession in Jamshedpur. Later, some people in Haldipokhar had called for a bandh to suspend the Potka circle officer and take action against those responsible for the stone-pelting in which five persons were injured.
