Chandigarh: The Ghanaur police in Patiala have booked an NRI girl and her family on charges of cheating after she reportedly refused to bring her husband to Canada.

According to the information, Gurpreet Singh of Sarana Khurd village in Patiala district had filed a complaint before the police alleging that her wife Akwinder Kaur, who had gone to Canada on student visa, snapped all ties with him after recently getting permanent residency in Canada.

He told the police that they got married on December 15, 2018 and later his family spent Rs 16 lakh to send her to Canada on student visa.

Police after conducting a thorough investigation registered a case under sections 420, 120B of IPC against four persons, including the girl.

He said his family even convened a meeting of panchayat of both the parties and got the panchayati agreement done that Akwinder Kaur will invite her husband Gurpreet after getting PR and its time was fixed for February 28, 2022.

Even after this, Akwinder Kaur neither called Gurpreet Singh nor had any other conversation with the in-laws. On this occasion, the entire panchayat had taken the responsibility of Akwinder Kaur and her family, but Akwinder Kaur and her family retracted the panchayat agreement in February 2022. Following this, police now have registrated a case of cheating against Akwinder Kaur, her sister Amarjit Kaur and two other family members.

He urged the police to nab the accused who are residing in India and also applied to Union Ministry to extradite Akwinder from Canada.
