Chandigarh: In a major setback, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today rejected the bail application of former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu in connection with grain transportation scam.

Ashu, a Congress former minister, is currently lodged in Patiala jail in connection with a multi-crore food lifting scam. On October 12, the Vigilance had arrested Congress councillor Gagandeep Singh Sunny Bhalla, a close aide of Bharat Bhushan Ashu.

He was produced before the duty magistrate’s court next day and remanded in police custody for two days. However, Sunny Bhalla was later released.

So far, contractor Telu Ram and former food and civil supplies minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu have been arrested in connection with the scam. Ashu and Telu Ram are in jail. At the same time, 14 accused, including sacked Deputy Director RK Singla, former Minister Ashu’s alleged PA Meenu Pankaj Malhotra, Inderjit Singh Indi, are yet to come into the hands of the Vigilance.
