Canada, Peru Sign MOU to Strengthen Critical Minerals Cooperation

Canada and Peru have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to boost collaboration on critical minerals and sustainable mining, the federal government announced Friday.

The agreement, signed by Canada’s Ambassador to Peru Jean-Dominique Ieraci on behalf of Tim Hodgson, and Peru’s Minister of Energy and Mines Angelo Victorino Alfaro Lombardi, aims to advance bilateral investment, drive technological solutions for traceability and decarbonization, improve regulatory frameworks, and promote environmental and social best practices.

“This Memorandum of Understanding reflects the strength of Canada and Peru’s bilateral trade relationship and underscores our shared commitment to deepening co-operation in the mining sector,” Ieraci said. “Together, we are fostering innovation, promoting responsible resource development and building the skilled workforce needed for a low-carbon future.”

Hodgson highlighted Canada’s mineral resources and mining expertise as key drivers for trade and economic growth. “Canada has what the world wants,” he said. “This MOU with Peru, our second-largest bilateral merchandise trading partner in South and Central America, will strengthen our mining relationship and generate new opportunities for Canadian exports and investment.”

Since summer 2025, Canada has signed 21 bilateral collaboration frameworks on mining and critical minerals and led the creation of the G7 Critical Minerals Production Alliance, which has mobilized $18.5 billion in capital for mining projects in under six months.

The new agreement with Peru is expected to enhance Canada’s role as a major mining investor, expand exports of Canadian mining equipment, technology and services, and help build secure, diversified and sustainable critical mineral supply chains.
