Chandigarh: An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader has been arrested by the police in Punjab’s Tarn Taran for sending obscene messages to a NRI’s wife in a WhatsApp group.

The accused, Harpreet Singh, has been the district head of the party’s ex-servicemen wing.

A case has been registered against the accused at Sri Goindwal Sahib police station. He will be produced in court today.

In her complaint to the police, the victim said her husband lives abroad and she is working as a domestic woman. On April 28, at around 8.15 pm, she started receiving WhatsApp messages and phone calls on different numbers on her mobile number.

The woman said that wrong messages were also posted against her in a WhatsApp group by Harpreet Singh resident Chapri Sahib. The woman initially suppressed the matter, but finally lodged a complaint with the police station with her mother-in-law and maternal uncle.

Inspector Rajinder Singh of Sri Goindwal Sahib police station said that a case has been registered against Harpreet Singh under sections 509 IPC, 67-A IT Act and he has been arrested.
