Gurugram: A 33-year-old woman along with her minor son kept herself “confined” in a rented house in Haryana’s Gurugram’s Chakkarpur for three years due to Covid-19 pandemic scare, police said on Thursday.

According to the police, the incident came to light on Tuesday when a team of officials brought the duo out of the house. Her son is now 10-year-old.

Police teams, health department and child welfare department officials broke open the main door and pulled out Munmun Manjhi and her 10-year-old son. Later, the mother and son were taken to the Civil Hospital in Gurugram.

According to Civil Surgeon Gurugram, Dr Virendra Yadav, “The woman has some psychological problems. The matter came to light on February 17 when Munmun’s husband Sujan Manjhi approached Assistant Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar posted at Chakarpur police outpost. Sujan is an engineer in a private company.”

According to the police, while “imprisoning” herself for three years with her son, the woman did not allow her husband, who had gone to office after the first lockdown restrictions were relaxed in 2020, to enter the house.

Husband Sujan spent the first few days with friends and relatives and when he failed to convince his wife, he started living in another rented house in the same area.

According to the husband, video calls were the only way to stay in touch with his wife and son during this time. He paid the house rent and electricity bills.

He would buy groceries and vegetables, and leave ration bags outside the main door of his wife’s house.

Even the garbage of the house was not thrown out for 3 years and even the people in the neighborhood did not know that the mother and son were imprisoned in the house.

ASI Praveen Kumar said, “Initially, I did not believe Sujan’s claims but when he made his wife and son talk to me on video call, I intervened in the matter. The house where the woman was staying had so much dirt and garbage that if a few more days had passed, something untoward could have happened.”

Sujan said, “She is undergoing treatment now. Hopefully, my life will be back on track soon. “
