Richmond: Mounties in Richmond are warning people about online scams that it says have cost residents more than 16-million dollars in reported losses since 2023.
It says its Economic Crime Unit received 87 reports of online romance and investment schemes last year, which amounted to 16.17-million dollars in losses.
Police say the trend has continued into this year, with 12 cases reported so far, amounting to nearly 500-thousand dollars in reported losses.
The R-C-M-P is urging people to be cautious online, saying victims are often lured through dating apps or social media and are groomed over weeks and months before the scam happens.
